Short interlude between the Thonier and “Le Sphynx”. Passing a museum library, a book caught my attention: “Construction of ships in bottles”.
Curious about the method, I started with the model demonstrated: a sort of clipper. Then, wanting to go further, I continued with a small frigate of my own design, on which I put staysails.
The principle is simple. The model is constucted outside the bottle. Articulated yard arms on the mast permit the assembly to be inserted through the diameter of the neck, like a cigar. The sea is made out of silicon mastic, and the hull is glued in an imprint hollowed out for the purpose. Once dry, the elements of the rigging are raised with the aid of small hooks. The stopper is then permanently fixed in place.
