La Comète

The Comète was constructed at Brest in 1752 by J-L Ollivier.
The ornementation was by C.P. Caffieri.

She had gun ports for 26 canons and 4 x 4 pound canons on the quarter deck and forecastle. Note that this frigate is similar to the 1744 Renommée, which, since, has become the subject of a monograph by J. Boudriot.

The Comète was captured during the 7 Year War by the British vessel, HMS Bedford (ref. J.B.) and bought back by the French in 1763. Following that, she took part in a 12-month campaign in Cayenne and Martinique under the command of M. Latouche de Beauregard. She was armed with 22 x 8 pound canons, and she had a crew of 202 men.
I don't have any further information on this vessel.

The 1:48 scale model of the Comète is truly unique. She was the work of my father, Pierre Maillière, who began her in 1975. It was with the aid of Jean Boudriot that this model was able to be created. He supplied my father with plans of the Panthère, a similar frigate, of which records are kept at Greenwich. An abundant and productive regular exchange of correspondence between J. Boudriot and my father covered every detail of construction from the frame to the lower masts.

The Comète was completed in 1979.
- Modelled in pear.
- Ornamentation in box wood.
- The standing rigging is flax.
