Le Protecteur

64-canon vessel from the reign of Louis XV.
AAMM plan from the Maritime Museum model and "le Traité Géneral des Manoeuvres" (widow of Guillaume Gruchel, Havre 1732).

She was armed as follows:
- Gun deck: 26 x 24 pound canons
- Upper deck 28 x 12 pound canons
- Forecastle and quarter-deck: 10 x 8 pound canons

- The quarter galleries were of the English style (Jean Boudriot "les Vaisseaux de 74 à 120 canons" p. 305)
- The mizzen carries a large boom, but the lateen sail was abandoned in favour of a gaff sail, or English mizzen. The leech was fastened to the mizzen mast with lacing.

This model is one of Pierre Maillière’s, created between 1960 and 1965. It was the third model constucted by my father, the first having been the Bonhomme Richard in 1948 (the only known photo is shown opposite). The second seems to be Le Sans Pareil in 1950

To return to the Protecteur, I participated in the building of this model (lifeboats, upper works, and a bit of rigging).
Note: this model is painted in oils.
